What You REALLY Need to Start Wedding Photography (Beginner’s Guide)

Starting your journey as a wedding photographer can feel overwhelming—especially when it comes to gear. Do you really need the fanciest camera? How much backup is enough? Here’s a practical, honest guide based on real-world experience (and some pricey lessons learned!) to help you get started with confidence.

The Essential Gear List

·      Camera Body: Start with one reliable camera (full-frame or crop sensor). Dual card slots are a huge plus for backup—think Nikon Z6II or Z8.

·      Lenses: At minimum, get a versatile zoom (24–70mm) and a fast prime (like 50mm f/1.8) for low light and portraits.

·      Flashes: One on-camera flash (Godox v860ii or similar) for receptions and dark venues.

·      Memory Cards: Multiple high-quality, fast cards (at least 10). Always have spares!

·      Batteries: 4+ fully charged batteries—weddings are long.

·      Backups: External hard drive and cloud backup (Adobe Cloud or similar) for immediate post-event storage.

·      Emergency Kit: Not just for the couple! Pack extra memory, batteries, cleaning cloths, and a basic first aid kit.

Budget-Friendly vs. Pro Upgrades

·      Start Small: You don’t need every lens or accessory right away. Rent or borrow specialty gear as needed.

·      Upgrade When Ready: As you book more weddings, invest in a second camera body and more advanced lenses for flexibility and peace of mind.

·      Insurance: Protect your gear and your business with liability and equipment insurance from day one.

The Non-Gear Must-Haves

·      Contracts: Always use a contract—even for friends and family. It protects you and sets expectations.

·      Business Structure: Register your business (LLC recommended), get insured, and set up a business bank account.

·      Emergency Kit: Bring items like sewing kits, pain relievers, snacks, water, and anything you might need for yourself or to save the day.

Why This Matters

Starting with the right essentials keeps you prepared, professional, and focused on capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments. You’ll feel more confident—and your clients will notice!
